NVQs and other Vocational Qualifications (Levels 1-3)

These are linked to specific occupations and assess your ability to perform job-related activities in a work place. Some course teams may have special entry requirements for their courses, which will be discussed at your interview.

BTEC Introductory Diplomas (Level 1)

These are one-year courses, which are more focused on particular areas of work. They are mainly internally assessed through assignments.

GCSEs (Level 2)

The College offers English, Maths and Statistics re-sits (plus a limited number of other GCSE subjects on a one-year basis for adult students). This gives you the opportunity to re-sit if you are unhappy with the grades you achieved, or to take some GCSEs in combination with another course. We do not offer a full-time GCSE programme.

BTEC First Diplomas (Level 2)

These are one-year courses, which are more focused on particular areas of work. They are mainly internally assessed through assignments.

AS Levels and A2 Levels (Level 3)

We offer a comprehensive range of thirty A2 and AS Level subjects. In most cases, you will study for an AS Level in the first year with the A2 Level taken the following year. However, we do not guarantee to offer an A2 Level for every AS subject. You will need to achieve five or more GCSEs grades A-C, including English at grade C or above and one subject at grade B. Some subjects have specific entry requirements which will be stated.

Applied A Levels (Level 3)

Applied A Levels can be taken with academic A Levels or with other Applied A Levels. Applied A levels are more vocationally orientated than other A Levels, allowing more practical work related study, with the aim of helping understand a vocational sector.

BTEC National Diplomas (Level 3)

These involve the study of areas of work but are more focused than previously offered AVCEs and GNVQs. They are normally studied over 2 years and are equivalent to 3 A Levels. They are assessed by continuous assessment and assignments. These vocational qualifications are an alternative way to A levels to enter Higher Education.

Access and Higher Education Programmes (Level 3)

These offer adults with no formal qualifications progression to Higher Education and degree courses.

Higher National Diploma/Certificate (Level 4)

These are more advanced qualifications with a vocational emphasis that can lead on to a degree or employment.

Tutorial system

Every full-time student has a personal tutor. Your tutor is an important support for you during your study and is there to help you make the most of your time at College. Whether you just need someone to talk to, or help to resolve specific issues with your studies, your tutor will help you as much as they can. If you feel that you need specific help to access the course you want to do, e.g. a communicator if you have a hearing impairment, then the Inclusive Learning Centre can help.

Key Skills

As well as your chosen area of study, you will also develop 'Key Skills' in the following areas: Communication; Information Technology; Application of Number. Key Skills will help you with independent study and prepare you for life after college, whether at work or at university. All students will undertake a diagnostic assessment at central college induction that will indicate if additional support can help with your studies.
