EFC celebrates fantastic A Level results
20th August 2009

Marking the culmination of the college’s first year in its new campus, overall success rates for A Levels showed a marked improvement on the previous year. Early indications showed a 9% increase in A2 Level pass rates from 2008.
Interim Principal Jeannie Wright was pleased with the results. “My congratulations go out to all of our students who achieved their A/S and A2 passes this year. These results are a vindication of the work that they’ve put in over the previous 12 months.
“A lot of the courses have 100% pass rate so there's a definite sign of an upward trend which we're really pleased with. It's been without doubt a lot of hard work for everybody. It's been a lot of change but the staff have worked really hard and there's a real will here to go forward and get better.”
As a result of their excellent results, many of the students are now looking forward to continuing their education at university. The college is particularly pleased at the number of these students who are the first in their family to enter Higher Education. Some students have also progressed internally onto courses at the college, such as the Art Foundation course, in preparation for Higher Education next year.
Some particular noteworthy student successes include Ummi Khanom, who achieved AAA in English, History and Government & Politics. Ummi, who previously attended Central Foundation Girls School, said: “I’m really pleased with my grades, but I wanted to get higher marks in some of the subjects! I’ve secured my place at Royal Holloway University studying English Literature. I want to thank my tutors – they’re fantastic! The college was my first choice when I go t my GCSE results, and I’m glad I stuck with it.”
Liz Gordon from Stratford achieved an A in Law and B in English Literature. Liz, who previously attended Eastlea Community School, will now move on to study Journalism at Bournemouth. Although pleased that she had secured her first choice course, Liz admitted that there would be things that she would miss. “I’ve made loads of friends since I started at the college. It’ll be strange not seeing them every day now, but we’ve all said that we’ll keep in touch.”
There were also students who achieved success in terms of individual subjects. Emily Longstaff , Sue Cooper, Laura Masters and Bethan Sen all achieved 100% marks in their A/S Level in Photography.
The improved success of the college’s A Level students mirrors that of its vocational students, many of whom are also progressing onto university. The college has offered A Levels alongside qualifications like BTEC National Diplomas, which gives students the equivalent of 4 A Levels.
Rekha Mistry is one such student. Having already gained 3 Distinction grades in the BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design, the equivalent of 3 A’s, Rekha took an A Level in Graphic Design, where she gained another A grade. This was the culmination of an excellent 2 years for Rekha, as she was also recognised as an exceptional student in the college’s Learner Awards in July this year.
